You have been chosen to save 1.3 million+ animal species from extinction.
Why Save? This question stands at the heart of all that the FlashPals stand for. These cute USB drives are mascots of Biodiversity, representing the need to save the 21,000 + species on the endangered species list. The FlashPals ask this simple question because most of us don’t even know why it is important to save. That was certainly my case for many years. I did not know that there was a need to save anything, or how to make any difference on my own.
My education started by looking to the problem. The evidence was all there. The stories of species that have existed in our lifetime, and are today extinct, brought the problem to home and heart. In the past, species went extinct over hundreds or thousands of years. Today, we have changed the world so much, that we can wipe out an entire thriving species in less than a generation. Why is this happening? And why should we be concerned?
Because you’re human. That’s Why. Humans have a unique role in our world, with great responsibility to make sure that this world is here in the future with life still on it. Humans have a capacity to love and think critically. It is our love for the world and for the life on it that must inspire us to save the beautiful, incredible and unique.
When I was a boy, I remember going outside and catching Monarch Butterflies. They were amazing orange and black creatures that often filled entire trees with color. Their chrysalis, where they went in as caterpillars and emerged as butterflies, was like something from a science fiction movie. What an amazing skill! Today this species is on the list of endangered plants and animals.
Why is this animal threatened? The monarch will only lay its eggs on the milkweed plant. But as humans take over more of this earth, they are destroying the milkweed because we see it as a weed, or bad, plant. This is called habitat loss, where an animal loses the place where they live. Many of the animals on the endangered species list face this type of struggle and the main cause is human population growth.
Learning more about our world and how it is held together may be the most important thing that you can do. As you continue following the FlashPals and learning on your own, I hope that you will keep the question, “WHY SAVE?” in your mind. There are many answers, and by finding them, you are taking the first step toward being one of the heroes who are saving the world.
